Style Focus: Schott

When it comes to iconic menswear brands, few have made their mark like Schott. Having started out in a small New York basement making raincoats, brother's Jack and Irving Schott went on to create a globally recognised brand that became synonymous with street cool. A true American classic, Schott was the first brand to use a zipper on a jacket - a technique that seems so obvious now revolutionised the early twentieth century approach to outerwear and lodged the brothers firmly into fashion history. WWII saw Schott commissioned by the US Military to produce high quality, durable clothing that could be used in service. Their collaboration with the forces served for 60 years, but it was the adoption of the brand by the 50's bikers and rock groups that made them stars of the show. Their most iconic design - the 'Perfecto' leather jacket - was made famous by Mr Marlon Brando in 1953's 'The Wild One' and propelled Schott into superstardom. With a little bit of help from the movies, the brand's universal wearability and unique design made them a global icon that had far reaching appeal. Transcending the rock 'n' roll movement that made it famous, Schott was taken on and refashioned by the punks who followed. Now, almost 100 years on, Schott is recognised as an American icon, lauded for its unquestionable influence on style. Good for those who like their fashion confident and cool, great for those with a rebellious side.
